Cranial Remolding Helmets

Hope Cranial 2

All infants have a flexible skull – it must be malleable for birth to occur. However, flat spots or an abnormal shape may form afterwards due to tortacollis or spending too much time on one side of their body - commonly referred to as Plagiocephaly.  If left untreated, it may cause hearing and vision problems due to the misalignment of the ears and/or eyes.

Ideally, we would like to see your child within the first 4 - 6 months for the initial scanning and evaluation. This will allow us enough time to shape their skull into a more acceptable cranial range - if deemed necessary. At the first appointment we will take a scan of your son/daughter's skull using our 3D imaging software. This will be used to  accurately measure the cranial discrepancy, and define the severity of their Plagiocephaly.

If it's determined your child's Plagiocephaly is too severe to be corrected with positioning, we will then begin the process of creating a custom cranial helmet for them to wear.  The process is painless and the helmet encourages the "flattened" portion to grow into the open space in the helmet, while holding the high side in place.

Normally after 3 - 6 months of consistent use,  the child no longer needs to wear the helmet because their skull has formed into  a healthier shape.   Once they are out of the helmet, it's important to keep from laying on one side more than another until the soft spot closes on their skull - usually around their 1st birthday.
